On Saturday, October 17 at 2pm, Kai Art Center hosts a meeting with the artist of Island Beyond the Sea, Jane Jin Kaisen. The artist will introduce the background to her practice and discuss how her delicate films were made in the depths of the sea. The event is in English and participation is included with an exhibition ticket.
Opening on October 17, Island Beyond the Sea is the first solo exhibition in the Baltics by the acclaimed artist Jane Jin Kaisen (b. 1980, KR/DK/US). It presents seven films of remarkable scope and cinematic language, all rooted in Kaisen’s birthplace: Jeju, an island with a tragic history. Lying off Korea’s southern coast, Jeju is a place where upheaval and endurance have settled in layers upon one another. Projected at large scale and installed throughout the space, the films do not stand opposite the viewer but surround them, creating a movement that unfolds in the rhythm of the tides through ritual, myth, grief and memory. To remember is also to see, and to see is to acknowledge; looking becomes a form of witnessing, a chance to see silenced histories, and the people who lived them, anew. In each of these films, Jane Jin Kaisen forges new connections between past and present, the living and the dead, offering the chance to experience patiently how life returns.
The exhibition is supported by the Korea Foundation, the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Danish Arts Foundation, the City of Tallinn and the SBS Foundation Korea Artist Prize Promotion Fund.
