Sunday in the Estonian Film Classics special programme opens with a true cornerstone of Estonian cinema: Arvo Kruusement’s evergreen Spring (Kevade, 1969), a film that has shaped the cultural memory of several generations of Estonians.
The day dedicated to Arvo Kruusement will be introduced by journalist and film critic Annika Koppel, author of the book Kevade. Suvi. Sügis. Arvo Kruusemendi filmid (Spring. Summer. Autumn. The Films of Arvo Kruusement), who will share fascinating stories about how the films were made. The introduction is in Estonian but the film has English subtitles.
Based on Oskar Luts’s immortal novel, the film brings to the big screen the joys and sorrows of the schoolboys and schoolgirls of Paunvere. Arno’s longing, Teele’s stubbornness, Toots’s mischief, Kiir’s misfortunes and Lible’s worldly wisdom come alive in an unforgettable atmosphere. Kruusement’s gift for capturing the Estonian character, with its warm humour and melancholy, makes this a film that unites generations and still speaks to audiences decades later.
