23-year-old Rakel shares a flat in Oslo with her best friend Ingrid. She has dropped out of her graphic design studies, draws comics and enjoys her freedom. She has plenty of plans, but becoming a mother isn’t one of them. So it comes as a huge shock when she finds out that, after a one-night stand, she is already six months pregnant and it’s too late for an abortion. The father could be aikido instructor Mos, or someone else entirely. Meanwhile the baby growing inside her, a drawn “ninjababy”, starts talking to her, commenting on her choices and meddling in her life.
“Ninjababy” is a funny, unapologetically crude and heartfelt film about growing up, responsibility and a woman’s right to decide over her own life. The film’s animations were created by Inga H. Sætre, the author of the graphic novel. It premiered in 2021 at the Tromsø International Film Festival, screened in the Generation 14plus section of the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Audience Award at SXSW. Kristine Kujath Thorp won Norway’s Amanda Award for Best Actress for the lead role.
The screening is held in cooperation with the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Admission with an exhibition ticket.
We also invite you to visit acclaimed artist Jane Jin Kaisen’s solo exhibition “Island Beyond the Sea”, now open at Kai Art Center. Made up of seven films, this mesmerising journey takes you deep into Korean traditions and history. It is the first time Kaisen’s work is shown in the Baltics.
The gallery is open until 6 pm, so we kindly ask you to visit the exhibition before the screening begins.
