Helena is a strong and efficient woman, an experienced radiopharmacist who has no trouble dealing with the practicalities of life. Helena’s job also gives her a good insight into what goes on behind closed doors and in the shadows of the night. But the fact that, as a mother, she has long since emotionally abandoned her daughter Stef goes unnoticed.
This autumn, smart but lonely 15-year-old Stefi will make every mother’s nightmare come true. She shaves her hair, stops going to school, doesn’t come home at night and, at the instigation of her new friend Marianne, finds herself in a violent youth gang that is not short of drugs, cruel manipulation and cyber bullying. Helena spends her days in fear and her nights waiting and searching for Stef. Nine-year-old Sander mourns the loss of his dearest playmate, his “old-fashioned” sister, and suffers from parental inattention. Husband Kaarel is caught between two fires – trying to cling to the ribbons of trust with naive stubbornness, while swallowing increasingly bitter disappointment.
When Stefi is admitted to hospital with a severe overdose, Helena hatches a desperate, even insane plan. She plans to secretly kidnap her daughter from everyone and imprison her in the family’s old cottage. Visit her every day, make her warm food and hope the shock imprisonment will work.
But everything doesn’t go according to plan. An unexpected turn of events traps Helena somewhere between reality and hope, forcing her to look in the mirror and redefine her love for her mother.
