November at Kai
Whitechapel Gallery, Kai Art Center & PÖFF present: Artists’ Film International at Kai Art Center on 22 and 23 November.
Launched by Whitechapel Gallery (London), the platform Artists’ Film International (AFI) brings together 19 partnering organisations around the world to create a common distribution network for artists’ films. The films that are screened for the first time in Estonia have been created by international artists over the last few years. A roundtable discussion will be held on the opening day, featuring Patrick Hough, Mari-Leen Kiipli, Kristina Norman, and Whitechapel Gallery’s curator Emily Butler as the moderator. On 21 and 22 November, Kai is hosting an artist film workshop, led by Benjamin Cook (LUX). The director of LUX – Great Britain’s principal distribution agency of experimental and artist films – leads a two-day practical workshop in Tallinn. The participants are welcome to come with their project or idea, to further develop it under the guidance of a professional. Due to individual coaching, the group size is limited to 8 people. Sõprus at Kai
The weekly movie nights Sõprus at Kai, taking place every Tuesday, will continue with the screenings of “Holy Motors” (Leos Carax, 2012) and “Climax” (Gaspar Noé, 2018). Kai movie ticket costs 5€/3€, together with the exhibition 8€.
The exhibition “Let the field of your attention…. soften and spread out” (curated by Hanna Laura Kaljo) will be open until 1 December. There is a guided tour each Saturday at 2pm (in Estonian) and Sunday at 2pm (in Russian).

9.11 at 4.10pm Nele Suisalu’s performance “Allow yourself (…)”, with children of all ages particularly welcome
23.11 at 3.41pm Pia Lindman’s performance “Sompio Lokka Journey”
The screening of Sam Smith’s “Lithic Choreographies” will take place twice each day, when the sun passes the zenith and at sunset.
Kai Residency
Kai’s first resident Felipe de Ávila Franco will finish his residency with a talk at Kai Art Center on 4 November at 6pm. The talk will be moderated by Ann Mirjam Vaikla, the director of Narva Art Residency. Felipe de Ávila Franco talks about his artistic practice and the research he conducted in the industrial areas of Ida-Viru County and Narva Art Residency.
On 11 November, the next resident, Saara Hannus from Finland, will begin their residency. Hannus is a queer-feminist artist and curator, who works in the intersections of sexual/romantic relations and art making. Read more about Saara Hannus and the next Kai residents from here.
New destinations for foodies will open their doors on the first floor of the Kai building in November – restaurant Kampai and pastry shop Suhkruingel.
